Golf Gps .30beta Released + CourseMaker update

I have uploaded the latest release of Golf Gps.  I have also added some pretty cool features the the course maker (see below).

.30beta 10/16/2008
Added Driving Range screen
Added Display in Meters
Added New Course option
Fixed Accuracy showning ‘Unknown’ for known reasons
Fixed bug that caused a crash if file was misformatted

All in all, it’s a pretty big update.  Download it, check it out, and let me know of any issues.

CourseMaker .30beta–Lot’s of cool stuff added here.  You can now add hazard distance to each hole, add the driving range distances (which are optional) and the best part is, you can now open any course that is made into the course maker.  This includes all courses already made!  This means you can open it up, make the changes, and then resave it!  Pretty cool huh!  Just don’t go in and destroy someone’s course for shits and giggles.  I don’t want to have to lock it all up with registration, but if it happens, I will move in that direction.  FYI, I do back all the courses up, so if it does happen, just let me know, and we will get it fixed.

Sweet! Just in time to play golf tomorrow!

  2. Damian - November 2nd, 2008

I’ll actually put this in the latest release column – Thanks for making this program! Question though, as it won’t run on my phone – I have a brand spanking new Samsung Epix (i907), running WM6.1pro, which I believe uses .NET2.0. The program crashes immediately, and tells me I need a newer version of .NET. I’ve read all I could at your site, but don’t see any mention of it. Any ideas?

  3. Gudy - November 3rd, 2008

You need version .net framework version 3.5. Here is the link:

  4. Nacho - November 3rd, 2008

Hi Gudy, I found your software by pure luck, and it’s amazing. I have some notes for it:
    1. In the accuray it would be nice to know the porcentage of accuracy instead of some word like good, etc.
    2. The metereing it’s very fast. Any way to use more hazzards in each hole?
    3. Any chance to add scorecard?
    4. If I made any changes in the course, how I uploaded to the page? so everyone can use it?
    5. Any chance to have a web site design for mobile so you can download the course in the filed?
I lived in Bogota – Colombia and I will very happy to help you in testing any new programs.
    Let me know!!!

  5. Gudy - November 3rd, 2008

    Hey Nacho,
    1) I could, but it is not a percentage, rather a hyperbollic number closing in on 1. I can however put in there exactly what each “name” means in terms of accuracy, as in good means it is accurate within 3 yards.
    2) Sure, but I wanted this to be small and simple. If I add more, it will also make each of the distance font size smaller, and harder to read in bright sunlight.
    3) You keep score? Hehe, ya I have thought about it, but that’s about it.
    4) Right now there is not a way. I would need to write a pretty advanced script to check the file to make sure it is legit. Otherwise, the hackers of the world would load all sorts of crap on there. I am working on this however.
    5) great idea, and it is in the future.

Way off topic, but my wife says Bogota is beautiful. She has been there a few times with work, and out of all the countries she travels to in central and south America, she likes Colombia the best! It’s too bad Colombia has such a bad rep here in the states, sounds like it would be a great tourist destination!

  6. Damian - November 3rd, 2008

Thanks for the response. I figured that out, and installed it yesterday. Works great now. Any way to make the size configurable? My phone has a 320×320 screen, and not having to scroll would be handy…

  7. Gudy - November 6th, 2008

Damian, let me think about that, I might be able to come up with something!

  8. Alex - November 17th, 2008

Just downloaded program and setup map for Cruz_Farms_Farmingdale_Birdsall but left out it is in NJ can this be updated

  9. Gudy - November 17th, 2008

Sure, 2 ways, one, open it up in the course maker, then just rename it (I will delete the old one). Or, when I have the time, I will just go in and rename it.

  10. John - November 23rd, 2008

Hello, I just downloaded this app. When I run it, however, I get an ObjectDisposedException. Any ideas why this is happening?

    Thanks – John

  11. Gudy - December 8th, 2008

John, I think you might have an old version of the program. Check the “About” link in the menu and make sure it is .30beta. I know if you have .28 or older you might get this error.

  12. Thierry - December 23rd, 2008

Hello, i try to use golf gps on my HTC Pharos, in french configuration, when i want to load a course i have this message :”File Format Incorrect or File Missing: FormatException”.
Do you have any idea about that ?
For your information, i tested a course with all point at 0 and i had not the message.

  13. Richard - December 29th, 2008

Hi, I just have a question about setting up golf GPS. I have an omnia and I am unable to get a fix using your app. I was wondering if I had to set my GPS settings to a specific com port and baud rate to get it to work with your app.

Thanks for any help you can offer (feel free to email me on the included email address)

  14. Richard - December 30th, 2008

In response to my own question COM PORT 2 works.
(My other settings are hardware com port 9 and baud rate 9600)

  15. Michael - January 2nd, 2009

Downloaded and set up version 0.3b of your program, but the GPS will not start on my ASUS A696 running WM5 and .NET 3.5.

    Settings are:
    - Program Port: COM5
    - Hardware Port: COM2
    - BAUD Rate: 115200

These settings work fine for other GPS apps apps on my pocket pc, so I thought that your would work also…

Any help would be really appreciated as this would be REALLY useful and save me $400 by not buying another independant unit…

    cheers n beers

  16. Gudy - January 3rd, 2009

Michael- two things to try, change the baud rate to 4800, and under the access tab in the gps settings, make sure “Manage GPS automatically” is selected. My program uses the Intermediate driver by Microsoft and if it doesn’t control it, it won’t work. On mine, the hardware port is set to “NONE”, but since you are using an external unit, I think yours does need to be set to the right com port, which it sounds like you have found. Hope this helps, and if you have further issues, just post them here.

  17. Michael - January 5th, 2009

Many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, neither of these two solutions work (I previously had the “Manage GPS Automatically” checkbox already checked). The GPS on my pocket PC is internal – does this make any difference?

  18. Gudy - January 5th, 2009

Ya, it means it should work! try these settings:
    Programs: COM4
    Hardware: (NONE)
    Access: Manage GPS Automatically

Go into Golf GPS, open a course, what does the accuracy say? Also, Click and hold on the text in the Accuracy box, a menu will pop up. select the “Get GPS Information”. Let me know what the first 4 lines say (Device Name, Device State, Service State, and Sat Count/View).

  19. Thierry - January 5th, 2009

Hello, when i want to load a course i have the message :”File Format Incorrect or File Missing: FormatException”.
    My configuration is :
    Windows Mobile 6 PRO
    .NET CF 3.5
Have you any idea about this message ?

  20. Gudy - January 5th, 2009

Thierry-Make sure you have .30beta (open program, file, about). If it is anything else, uninstall, and reinstall the correct version (main memory is best). Then, reload the course. There should be a sample course included (Alvamar I think is the name, does it load?).

  21. Gudy - January 5th, 2009

Richard–Sorry, your comments slipped by me, follow the instructions I left for Michael and see if that helps, if not, post again here.

  22. Michael - January 6th, 2009

The GPS settings you specify are no good for my device – still nothing happens, even after resterting the GPS via the menu option. When I set them to those you suggest, even TTN will not find the GPS, so unfortunately, for me it’s not really a valid solution.

Just for your info, the GPS Info is as follows:
    Device Name:
    Device state: on
    Service state: On
    Position is not Valid

Ypur help is much appreciated as it’d be nice to get this working on my ppc.

  23. Thierry - January 6th, 2009

I had uninstall and reinstall the 0.30 beta version in the main memory. I downloaded the course “Alvamar Public Course”.
But the result is the same as above. For your information after trying to load a course, i select the option “Restart GPS”, and after i select “Set Position -> Set front Position” i have the message”the process can’t acces at file \My Documents\Courses\Alvamar public Course.gps, because this file is in use by an other process.
Perhaps there is something wrong in my phone…

  24. Gudy - January 6th, 2009

Michael-Don’t give up quite yet, I think we can get this figured out. The fact that it reports the gps is on, and the service is on is good news! Put the settings back to the way it works with other programs. Do you have google maps? if not get it and install it. Run it and get a fix. Once you get a fix, leave it open, run golf gps, load a course and see if it responds. If not, once again report back to me the text in Accuracy and the gps information screen like you did before.

Thierry- Something is a bit strange, I have not had any other users with this problem. Let me think about it for a bit, I might think of something to try.

  25. Michael - January 7th, 2009

    Here’s what I did:
    - start iNavi and wait for positive satellite connection
    - start Golf GPS, load a course
    - Still no fix

GPS Status info is as in my previous post.

Even the icon in the ppc top status bar says that it’s active and connected…

    Thanks again for your help

  26. Gudy - January 7th, 2009

Very strange. I am out of ideas without having the device in front of me. You might try freecaddie, it is similar to this, and is free, but it is a little cumbersome. I ask that you keep an eye on this, as I release updates, it might fix your issue.

    Thanks and good luck!

  27. Henric - January 10th, 2009

I had the same problem as Thierry describes ”File Format Incorrect or File Missing: FormatException” when loading courses. I also tried uninstalling Golf Gps and even the .net 3.5 framework but no luck.
Since i live in Sweden i have swedish settings for National Settings in wm 6.1. After changing them to english (US) all the courses load without a problem. I don’t know if this is any help for you Gudy. Is it something you could fix fro next release?

Awesome app, still some months until the golfcourses open around here ;( but cant wait to try it on the course!!

  28. Gudy - January 10th, 2009

well shucks! That makes a lot of sense, since I have only ever delt with English programs, I never thought about the problems that might arise in other launguages. Could someone else please confirm this as the problem, and I will start looking at how to go about fixing it. Henric, Thank you so much for figuring this out, I was at a complete lost.

  29. Brian - January 15th, 2009

Any other way to get courses? Google maps does not have close enough imagery to map my course…

  30. Thierry - January 18th, 2009

Gudy to be sure that the problem ”File Format Incorrect or File Missing: FormatException” become from the language, could you send me the version 0.26 of GOLFGPS to test it and give you the feedback?
Or tell me where can i download this version.

  31. Gudy - January 18th, 2009

Brian, you can create your course right on your device, just select new course under menu, then set each position as you play.

Thierry- I will have to look to see if I even have that version still. I don’t think it will help, I had another user confirm it is indeed a language issue. It looks like I am going to have to include other languages for this, or figure out what exactly is “breaking” in other languages. I will keep you all informed.

  32. shaun - January 20th, 2009

WM6, Updated .net framework but im getting a “NotSupportedException”

  33. Thierry - January 20th, 2009

Gudy, i found the problem : it become from the configuration of how are coding the number. My configuration is french(standard) and the decimal symbol is “,” and the separator list is “;”. So if i modify the configuration to have English(US), the decimal symbol is “.” and the separator list is “,” and GOLFGPS works fine.
So i use french(standard) configuration with english(US) decimal symbol and separator list.
Now i will can use this software.

Hey I’m Using the samsung epix and i don’t think the program is connecting to the gps in the phone…is there a certain com port i have to set the external gps to?
    thanks for the help.

  35. Dennis - April 22nd, 2009

Iam running Swedish HTC Diamond and I changed decimal symbol to “.” and separator list to “,” after that its ok.

  36. James - May 2nd, 2009

i am having the same problem as shaun.
    i have a blackjack2 running wm6.
    i updated to .net 3.5
i assume i am running the newest version of golfgps since i downloaded it yesterday

when i try to open the program i get the following error:

    Microsoft.AGL.Common.MICS.HandleAr(PAL_ERROR ar)
    System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstance(WNT wnt, UInt32 dwStyle)
    System.Windows.Forms.Control..ctor(WNT wnt)

  37. brice - May 21st, 2009

    hello gudy
i have the same problem that thierry and i do modification with “.” replace “,” and “,” replace “;”

  38. Keith - May 27th, 2009

This will be fabulous once I get it working, On my samsung omnia. Windows Mobile 6

-I just installed it successfully on the phone.
    _I installed required
-I created a course, and downloaded it to the phone as well
-I can load the course in the opened program on the phone
-But the phone gps is not connecting to give distance readouts

I turned on the GPS (no help so far)
I am in the process of downloading google maps to see if that helps

  39. Keith - May 27th, 2009

I don’t know how to change com port settings for the gps on this phone, as I can find the spot where the option is given

  40. mgudenka - May 27th, 2009

I see there are a lot of comments on this topic. It would help me out if you, if you are still having issues, post your questions in the forum ( This thread is 7 months old, and I don’t remember what I have commented back on or not.

Keith–Currently, golf gps uses the Microsoft Intermediate Driver, no port should be neccessary for it to work. Did google maps work for you?

James–I think the blackjack is a WM standard phone, support for standard is not supported at this time. Does it have a touchscreen? If not, then it is standard. Sorry

  41. Martin - June 28th, 2009

Hi, I’ve got a htc dimond touch 2, i’m not great with all things computers, after installing.30 beta in then needed to upgrade to .net3.5 which i thought would get me up and running but now i get:

    at GudenGolfGps.Frm1.ctor()
    at GudenGolfGps.Program.Main()…

It’s probably somthing simple that I’m doing wrong but any help would be much appreciated.

  42. Mark - October 11th, 2009

    same error as James above:
    Microsoft.AGL.Common.MICS.HandleAr(PAL_ERROR ar)
    System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstance(WNT wnt, UInt32 dwStyle)
    System.Windows.Forms.Control..ctor(WNT wnt)

    running on HTC Ozone

  43. Marco - April 5th, 2010

I downloaded the programme, and then added my local course via Coursemaker. No sign of the added course! Did you receive my submission? I named it Kirkcaldy_Golf_course_Kirkcaldy_UK and then, for safety added a further – Balwearie_Golf_Course_Kirkcaldy_UK – both the same course.
    Please check out and advise.
Looks a very promising prog so far – fingers crossed!

  44. Lance - September 24th, 2010

I have a sprint samsung epic 4g….I downloaded the app, but when I go to the webpage on my phone it says it is not available, page under construction, ect. However the webpage is available when I access it through my computer….Any suggestions?

  45. mgudenka - September 25th, 2010

the epic is Android right? this page is for Windows Mobile. Use your computer to put the courses on. I will try it with my phone later and see if that is even possible.

  46. Jim Macdonald - November 14th, 2010

As a golf nut but a techo not, I think you said that GudenGps won’t work unless the Windows Mobile is a touch screen, right? Shame – I have a HTC Snap 6.1 with a single scroll button. Any clever tricks I can do to tweak it? (I get that familiar “NotSupportedExtension….etc”
Congratulations on what you have done and are doing.
    Cheers Jim

  47. mgudenka - November 16th, 2010

    Hi Jim,

You are correct, it will not work on a non-touch screen Windows Mobile phone. It is more because the non-touch screen phones have a different .net library than the pro version phones. A while ago, I tried to modify the golf program to compile to the standard (non-touch) version, but was unsuccessful due to it missing some key libraries. Sorry
